I bought a copy of this ebook and reviewed it.
Kalynn Bayron is one of my favorite authors; I’ve been following her since her debut novel. This was pitched as a retelling of Frankenstein, and I was looking forward to it since it got announced. I bought it right when it came out for my Kindle, and it did not disappoint! Fast paced, mysterious, and more than a little shocking, this horror novel had me at the edge of my seat! I really enjoyed it, and it is easily one of my favorite books of the year. The pacing was snappy, the prose was concise and sharp, and I loved the ending! Even though this was a retelling, it would have easily stood on its own merit. It was creepy, in the most delicious way! This book was wonderful, and I was biting my nails as I read. Bayron had penned another home run!
Meka and Death are close bedfellows; after all, it is the family business. As the newly minted mortician’s assistant at her parents’ funeral home, her days are filled with quiet, if unusual, routine. Thankfully, her boyfriend, Noah, isn’t freaked out by it, and she is ready to say the three words that will change both of their lives. But then, an unspeakable tragedy strikes, and Meka’s world is shattered forever. Odd things begin happening around her: ravens circling her home, strange glowing lights and mysterious sounds in the middle of the night. And the dead don’t seem to stay dead. There are dark family secrets that are lurking just at the edge of the shadows, and what she uncovers may just be too much to bear…
This book was so great! I may be a little biased, but Kalynn is one of my favorite authors, and this book did not disappoint! I was immediately drawn in by Meka’s voice, and her unusual profession. I loved her, her parents, and Noah, as well as her friends. The pacing was fast but smooth, and I was on the edge of my seat. I was constantly wondering what was going to happen next. This book took the original Frankenstein and cranked it up to a thousand. I loved the sinister, gothic touches that were added as Meka struggled to solve the mystery of her family and just exactly why she was so attuned to the dead. And that ending! It was incredible! This book is one of my favorites of the year; I love horror books, and this was a great one! It was worth waiting for! The bottom line: Dark, spooky, and thrilling, I loved Make Me A Monster! Next on deck: Finding Freedom by Erin French!
