I bought a copy of this book and reviewed it.
I’ve been wanting to read this book ever since I watched the film, and once I found it at a thrift store, I took it home with me. From there, it sat on my shelf until I made a promise to try and read all of my bought books this year. I finally picked it up, and I’m so glad I did! I loved the film, so I was really intrigued by the book. This book was like Asian-American Pride and Prejudice times a billion (literally) and I loved it. It was a little difficult to keep up with the many characters, but once I got the hang of it, the book really flowed well. I was laughing, crying, and kicking my feet more than once. I was rooting for Rachel Chu and Nick Young until the book ended! And I couldn’t get it out of my head, so I’m currently borrowing China Rich Girlfriend. I can’t wait to finish this soapy, glamorous trilogy about rich people being bad! One of my favorite books of last year for sure!
Rachel Chu and Nick Young are a couple living together in New York, and they are happy with their lives. But everything changes when Nick invites Rachel to Singapore to meet his family. Everything seems perfect until they land, and Rachel realizes that her boyfriend’s family is much more than rich–they are filthy rich! Suddenly thrust into a web of long lineages and even steeper pockets, she must prove herself to Nick’s family, most of all, his mother Eleanor. Will Rachel be able to survive the cutthroat world of Nick’s childhood, or will she buckle under the pressure?
This book was such a riot! I loved it. It took some time to get used to the changing perspectives, but once I got the hang of it, the book flowed very smoothly. I love books with multiple points of views, it really deepens the story for me. I liked, also, that the book was told in the present tense; it really added to the overall feel. I was laughing, crying, kicking my feet! I loved the tension, but at times it got slow and I got a little bored. Nonetheless, this book was a nice break after all the dark stuff I’ve been reading, and I’m already enjoying China Rich Girlfriend! The bottom line: Glitzy, soapy, and funny, I loved Crazy Rich Asians! Next on deck: The Last Tale of the Flower Bride by Roshani Chokshi!
