Star Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars

I borrowed this book from my local library through the Hoopla service and reviewed it.

Melissa de la Cruz has been one of my favorite authors since middle school, and I decided that 2026 would be the year that I finished all of the series I left unread. To that end, I borrowed Blue Bloods from Hoopla and reread it. Honestly, this book was even more fun the second time around; I really enjoyed it. As far as vampire stories go, this one was pretty original, and I also loved all of the characters, especially Schuyler and Oliver. Full of humor, adventure, and dangerous secrets, this book was the best walk down memory lane for me. It really brought me back to myself as a freshman in high school, desperate for an escape. Melissa de la Cruz is really one of those authors that just gets better with age. Was this campy and out there and a little bit silly? Sure. But I liked it a lot; I can’t wait to read the rest of this series. There were little tiny flaws, but nothing so bad that I didn’t enjoy it. I’m looking forward to the rest!

Schuyler Van Alan is an unusual person: she attends fancy private school and exclusive clubs. However, she doesn’t fit in with her peers, dressed head to toe in designer threads and dripping in old money. She’s just content to hang out with her friends, Oliver and Dylan, and keep to herself. But everything changes for her when strange things start happening: new memories begin to crop up, she has odd cravings for unusual foods, and the veins start to glow blue under her pale skin. Her grandmother tells her she is a Blue Blood, a vampire descended from a line that goes all the way back to the Mayflower. But kids are going missing in a crucial time, under mysterious circumstances. She is soon thrust into a world full of secrets, intrigue, and danger. Will she survive?

This was a really good book! Soapy, delicious, and dark, I loved Blue Bloods! I loved that it didn’t take itself so seriously, and the way it took a fantasy spin on American history. There were elements of romance, too, which I enjoyed. The pacing was smooth but quick, and I devoured this book in a matter of four days. I really liked the characters, especially Schuyler, Oliver, Jack, and Bliss. I was on my toes the whole novel, and I was constantly guessing: Who are The Silver Bloods? Why are they killing people? I’m also super curious about the relationship between Jack and Mimi. But one of the best parts of this book was tne ending! The only real quibble I had was that sometimes all of the characters were hard to keep track of, but once the book sped up, the problem fixed itself. A wild, crazy fantasy romp, I loved Blue Bloods!
