I reviewed an advance reader’s copy of this book, given to me by the publisher through Netgalley. My thanks to both!

Stacey Lee is one of my favorite authors; I’ve read almost all of her books. So when her new book went live on Netgalley, I requested it, and I was so happy I was approved! I just finished this book last night, and it has been living in my head for days. This atmospheric, lush mystery had me in an absolute chokehold. I loved it so much. Rich with detail, rife with secrets, and sporting a love triangle that had me biting my nails, Heiress of Nowhere is one of my favorite books of 2026, and I’m so happy I read it! I’m hoping to get a copy of this book for my own personal library. Stacey Lee has penned another knockout!

On Orcas Island in 1918, Lucy Nowhere lives under the tutelage of her wealthy benefactor. Without parents, she has longed for a life free of the island. But just as she is about to leave for college, she finds her employer’s severed head on the beach. Rumors swirl of a mischievous creature named the Orkus, and its minions, the sea wolves (the local name for orcas). But Lucy is further surprised when it is revealed that her employer and warden has left the entirety of his estate to her, and not to his wayward son, Nash. Now in the sights of a real killer, she races against time to solve the mystery, all the while navigating misogyny and her own growing feelings for Nash and a childhood friend, Koa. But secrets hide in the shadows, and someone will not let them come to life without a fight…

This book was amazing. I was immediately drawn in by Lucy’s voice, and the lush, gorgeous atmosphere of Orcas Island in 1918, all wind and ocean. It almost felt like a character in and of itself. The pacing was measured but quick, and I couldn’t put it down. Even when I was not reading it, it lived rent-free in my head, and I was constantly wondering who killed Lucy’s adoptive father. I also loved all of the other characters, but especially Nash, Koa, Eva, Flossie, and Cookie. They all felt distinct, and I loved watching Lucy grow from a quiet, doubtful girl into a strong, fierce woman with a great sense of justice and self-assurance. The brooding, dark setting lurked even in my dreams when I was reading this. Possibly my favorite characters were not even human; it was the orcas, or the sea wolves, as they were christened in the novel. I was constantly biting my nails by the end of the novel; I could not believe the climax! I didn’t see it coming at all! The ending was wonderful too, I really enjoyed it. This book is my favorite of all of Lee’s novels, such a great achievement! I loved it so much!
